Green Park Sunday – February 6/7

This weekend we focus on the faith formation of children and consider Timothy as an exemplar of how this happens. Through Timothy, we see that household, school/education, and congregation each have an important and unique role in forming the faith of the next generation.

We also lift up and encourage children in our church as we honor the ministry of our Lutheran school, Green Park.  May God grant us the courage to empower and send our children in the name of Jesus.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Matthew 19:13-15
“Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” And he laid his hands on them and went away.

Mission Sunday – February 13/14

Sermon of February 13/14, 2021: Reluctant Witness by Rev. Dr. Michael Ziegler

Our congregation is a people loved by God and sent by God.  The word “mission” comes from the Latin missio, or “to send.”  Every year, we celebrate God’s mission both locally and abroad.

Our special mission guest this weekend is the speaker of Lutheran Hour Ministries Rev. Dr. Michael Ziegler. As the pandemic drags on in our nation and around the world, travel and “going” on mission trips still remain uncertain.  However, we do not have to board a place or travel to far off lands in order to carry out the mission of Christ.  Every Christian is a missionary and every place we go is a mission field. Rev. Ziegler shares our call to be witnesses wherever God sends us.

Missions is not the ‘ministry of choice’ for a few hyperactive Christians in the church. Missions is the purpose of the church.” — Unknown

“The spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions. The nearer we get to Him, the more intensely missionary we become.” — Henry Martyn, missionary to India and Persia

The mark of a great church is not its seating capacity, but its sending capacity.” — Mike Stachura

Colossians 4:2-6
Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.  Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
